Snowy Photo Tips

I used to be so afraid of taking photos outside in the snow or rain. I would hardly attempt it, but if you do it right,  it can actually make for some amazing photos. Heres what you need to do…

To get the best snowy photos you want the fluffiest flakes that you can get like this. It doesn't even have to be snowing that hard. You could have a very light snow fall and still achieve this magical look.
I had my shutter speed up at about 1/700 and my ISO up at about 500 to let some of the light back it.  Keep in mind that it depends on what time of day you are shooting at so its not going to be exactly what I had it at. Just remember that the higher your shutter speed is the quicker the shutter opens and closes, so anytime you have something in your scene thats moving you'll want to take up your shutter speed so you don't get blurry or streaky images, remember were trying to freeze the movement in the image.

When your shutter speed is to low it will look like this, so bump it up until the snow is light and fluffy.

After your shutter speed is right, you will have to turn up your ISO to let the light back in, this will depend on how dark it is outside, and how high your shutter speed is as well.

Your aperture is going to depend on how many people you have in your photo. We only had 2 and 3 of us in these,  so mine was somewhere between 2-3.5 because of the kind of lens I had at the time. I now have a fixed lens so I would have mine somewhere around 1.4-1.8

This should really help you to get really fluffy snow this year, just in time for the holidays!
